Information about Vania Elettra Tam

The irony and the seduction of her screenplays are overlapped with a veiled social critique but always with light, amused and surreal eyes. The spectator is invited to play with units of time, places and spaces, with the awareness that nothing is as it seems. Lately, after a solo show in which the contaminations present in her modus operandi have been highlighted, playing also with his surname, begins "ConTAMinAzione", a pictorial cycle dedicated to the great masters of the past. After studying at NABA and at the School of Advertising Graphics at Castello Sforzesco in Milan, she worked as a designer in the Como textile sector, later abandoned to devote herself exclusively to art. Her choice was soon awarded by the City of Como, which in 2005 organized the first personal exhibition at Chiostrino di Sant'Eufemia. Numerous exhibitions were held later in Art Galleries and in institutional locations, among the most important should be mentioned her participation in the 54th Venice Biennale - Widespread Italian Pavilion of Sgarbi at Palazzo Te in Mantova. Also in 2011 she was invited by Edoardo di Mauro to the highly select group "Another story: Italian art from the Eighties to the Zero" at San Carpoforo in Milan. The following year her works fly oversea to Cuba at the "Perturbaciones" exhibition at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana. In 2013 Ferdinando Creta invites her as an exponent of the best female art in "Iside Contemporanea" at the Arcos Museum in Benevento. In 2016 Franca Marri takes care of her personal exibition "Kanon Regole Ferree" in Trieste, an exhibition presented by the internationally renowned critic Edward Lucie-Smith. In 2016 the Šibenik City Museum dedicates her a personal exibition as special guest of the International Children's Festival in Croatia. In 2017 at Palazzo della Ragione the City of Mantua realizes her anthology «conTAMinAzione» curated by Carlo Micheli. She participates to the 2016 and 2017 editions of Wopart - Works on Paper Art Fair in Lugano for Frattura Scomposta. In 2019 "ConTAMinAzione" is presented at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa by Virginia Monteverde. Again by Monteverde, she takes part in the “Leonardesca” exhibition in the prestigious locations of the Sant’Agostino Museum in Genoa and then of the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes of Szczecin in Poland. She created the standard for the “Palio of Montagnana” 2019, exhibited in Castel San Zeno. Her works are part of the collection of the Parisi Valle Museum in Maccagno (VA), of the Museum of Palazzo Te in Mantua, of the National Directorate of the CGIL in Rome and of the CAB Art Gallery collection in Amman, Jordan. She lives and works in Milan.

Igor Zanti
from solo show’s art book "un giorno di ordinaria pulizia"
2008 - Wannabee Gallery – Milano
It is difficult to find an artist with such technical quality and attention to detail that chooses to put them to service of an ironic and irreverent language. It reminded me of the attitude of some artists who, the day after the promulgation of the art standards established by the Council of Trento, have fun irreverently with private clients, creating true masterpieces. The kitchen, the bathroom, the living room, the bedroom, and everyday tools that accompany the housewife in the repetitive rhythm of the housework, transformed to give rise to a plausible unreality, where every scene acquires an epic, poetic and theatrical flavour. One world, the one imagined by Vania Elettra Tam, which is granted to anyone, with few resources and a lot of imagination, to feel goddess or diva, saint or sinner, queen or commoner.

Alessandra Redaelli
from solo show’s art book "Cronaca Rosa"
2010 - Wannabee Gallery – Milan
Vania Elettra Tam is a contemporary philosopher who manages to say terrible things with the same lightness found in talk shows. Women, once more, are the protagonists. Women who in 2004 tried to define their identity assembling themselves piece by piece. In 2007 questioned themselves, alone in dark houses, just enlightened by a computer screen or the cold light bulb of a refrigerator. In 2008 they turned on the light to find themselves imprisoned by kitchen-traps that sucked them back inside cannibal household appliances, or by bathrooms that left them only enough space to daydream, while, standing inside bidet waiting for the shaving cream to do its course, transformed themselves for a moment in Venuses emerging from the waters.

Ivan Quaroni
from art book “Coexist. Eight different kind of fantastic art”
2012 - E-lite studiogallery – Lecce
Vania Elettra Tam’s painting is considered a pop painting of illustrative ascendancy because she uses the self-portrait as a spurious leit motive to investigate on the tic and obsessions of the contemporary feminine world. The artist draws her alter ego who puts effort into ordinary actions of daily life, the make up, having a shower or cooking... but, in her back, fantastic shadows on the domestic wall don't collimate with gestures and real movements of the characters. Vania Elettra Tam builds an ironic narration influenced by the traditions of European fairy tales and folk nursery rhymes, a sort of visible hypertext which runs parallel to the foreground actions. Her figuration mixes realistic mimesi and fantastic transfiguration and suggests a key of interpretation using circumstantial details all over the paintings.

Loredana Barillaro
from the article "Chinese Shadows | Vania Elettra Tam"2013 Small Zine
In suspended series - extremely ironic as exemplary from the title - female figures are portrayed as acrobats on wires of life, each in the flow of their days, the daily activities of their work. Each work is going to tell us how much effort play women. It is not that difficult to try to identify with them. After all, even today, maybe more than ever, for a woman to
manage in this society - sometimes violent - would become a tightrope walker. The female figures that the artist paints are never alone, there is someone behind, someone who the artist's imagination, as in a Chinese shadow play, knows how to transform into particularshapes, companions of a solitude that makes leaked a certain melancholy.

Iva Körbler
from the presentation of the solo exhibition “OKO 10”
2016 - Šibenik City Museum - Croatia
Vania Elettra Tam has been thematising continuously since 2004 the social and culturological position and role of young women in today’s consumer, hyperconsumerist society, where a wide range of mass media are trying to impose some false, unified models of a woman’s appearance, behaviour but also of stress imposed to today’s young women; they have to be perfect at everything – at their career, appearance, family and social obligations. By using a specific stylistic form, with paintings often containing self- portraits that integrate the elements of Pop Art and Hyperrealism, Vania Elettra Tam,from the woman’s point of view, provides a critical image of the world, which is extremely warning and educational: we can be pretty and well groomed but we can’t be empty- headed dolls because insisting on physical perfection or accentuating absolute perfection in all areas of life causes angst and anxiety. This is particularly important if we take into
account the pressure imposed on girls by mass media, which suggests a visit to a plastic surgeon as the fastest way to achieve success.

Franca Marri
from the presentation of the solo exhibition "Kanon - regole ferree"
2016 - Portopiccolo Art Gallery –Trieste
The artist elaborates portraits of Renaissance overlaping their faces of new iron gadgets aimed to correct their faces: too thin lips, noses a little 'crooked, too small eyes, foreheads, or minds too prominent. The canon of beauty, classical memory, once again intends to put order in a nature that seems resigned to undergo any artifice in the name of a dogma with no more meaning, in the name of something that no longer appears as an aspiration but only a form of coercion, an absurd convention. Everything always filtered through the varied universe of women that the entire work of Vania Elettra Tam is the protagonist of an imaginary both real and unreal, ironic and oneiric, alienating and detector, capable of
unmasking with intelligence and lightness of the many facets of their insecurities and frailties.

Carlo Micheli
from the anthological catalog "ConTamInAzione"
2017 - Palazzo della Ragione - Mantova
Tam includes it in her paintings for a choice of responsibility, to share the neuroses of his characters, to affirm their membership in the category of housewives frustrated, the couch potatoes, the compulsive goers of the supermarkets, the dreamers from gravure, of incurable gullible, the warriors of everyday life. And 'its a "Let us arm ourselves and start",
never an "arm yourselves and leave." To lend their likeness to the characters of her paintings she does not make herself as a hero, but a woman multiplied, able to live deeply all the experiences of her role, digging in herself, revealing dreams and needs, passions, expectations, disappointments, weaknesses and determination. One senses, in this great fresco in the style of Artaud, in this daily theater of cruelty, that the protagonist is the woman in her complexity and not the one who lends her image to make more credible the narration. We do not even touch the idea that there is a Vania / Barbie in a hundred different versions: all lead back images to a much broader concept, custom, even abstract, where the housewife, the dreamer, the frustrated, the career woman or the domestic worker are nothing but the same woman, with many facets that belong to herself, an intriguing woman, naive and bewitching, demure and shameless, a varied summary of femininity. As in a mad kaleidoscope images are doubled and recompose, presenting infinite variables, winking and venial provocations, naive or shameless, puns, double meanings that are followed in an irresistible whirlwind of contamination with literature, cinema, comics, Renaissance art, puzzles, the glossies. The everywoman Vania Elettra
Tam clings to the dream, the fantasy, the sensitivity to the peculiar qualities of the woman, to escape the monotony of everyday life: an ironing board becomes a surfboard with which dizzying ride waves; great aspirations come to mind when you grab a vacuum cleaner. But as always, talking about Vania Elettra Tam, lets not forget to emphasize the skill, rare
graphics capabilities, the originality of the sign ... And 'the fate of those who have something to say and knows externalize with their art: the end there is such a perfect symbiosis between what everyone is and how is, that we focus not to measure the individual components of the work, as saying that the graphics is taken for granted in a display that resembles a script, in works visual that are in fact stories.
